Coordinates projects with dependent groups and mitigate risks A day in the life Depending on the organization, team or task - TPMs can wear many hats. Some perform traditional project management responsibilities, some are ScrumMasters, some are ProductOwners - more focused on product-related aspects. But their primary responsibility is to coordinate and help develop solutions or processes in the technical space to ensure that what we are building meets the customer's needs. They specify the project’s constraints and ensure communication channels are clear up-and-down the chain. Often TPMs are the project cheerleaders. They help the team focus on the end goals and navigate setbacks. TPMs need to be able to negotiate and build consensus across groups (HIGHLY, HIGHLY important if you work on NPI projects and out-of-band projects with outside dependencies), help define project requirements and success criteria (especially important if the project’s nature is ambiguous to begin with) and schedule/coordinate the efforts of disparate groups with different “world views.” TPMs are the Point-of-contact (communication focal point in and out of the project/team). They research ideas and issues, locate resources, facilitate discussion and keep the ball rolling. They scope and document larger “programs.” (software or otherwise). They also build, maintain, and report metrics for areas of ownership. Some code and participate in the development process. Some are better on the customer end and maintain a dialog with customers, pick up sample materials, review third party designs and do anything that needs to get done. It’s a cliché, but it’s TPM mission to never just focus on the smaller aspect of a project like a specific feature (the trees) and forget the larger picture of why/what we are trying to accomplish (the forest).
