As our team grows, the AWS Infrastructure DNS team is seeking enthusiastic and talented Software Development Manager to lead a team that builds and operates the large-scale DNS systems used to drive the Amazon fleet. You will own systems that are critical to the platforms that Amazon's global retail, AWS and Kindle businesses run upon -- the DNS services in Amazon's data centers and integration of Amazon's systems with the likes of Amazon Route 53 to manage public DNS. Building, motivating and mentoring a world-class systems & software engineering team is the most important part of this role. You should have a proven track record in recruiting and retaining top talent and excel in day-to-day people and performance management tasks. You have strong Agile product management and delivery experience. In this role, you will create and implement product roadmaps for the team using Scrum methodologies. This will include helping innovate and invent new value-add services layered on top of our existing services. You will need excellent technical project management skills to deliver product roadmap items as well as other cross-team projects. You have a strong engineering background with an understanding of OO Design and DNS Technologies, network and OS expertise is a plus. Ideally, you have past experience working as a senior software development engineer. You enjoy keeping your technical skills reasonably current, to the point that you can still contribute to architecture discussions. You regularly take part in deep-dive troubleshooting exercises and drive technical post-mortem discussions to identify the root cause of complex issues. You also have strong operational experience and have a track record operating highly available fault tolerant systems. You know how to run a tight, lean, efficient operation. You will want to measure everything and be very data driven using metrics, monitoring and alarming to measure and improve the operational processes and performance of your team. You thrive operating in a fast moving, dynamic environment. Key job responsibilities Technical and People Management, handle multiple priorities at once, find paths forward in difficult situations and lead independently. A day in the life Be a leader-servant of a team of high performing software engineers with relentless high standards. You will need to arbitrate difficult situations with no clear path forward. Participate in design review meetings and meaningfully contribute. Make contributions to code. Participate in an escalation rotation to make sure we keep our services highly available. We are looking for a manager with similar ethos and somebody who can make trade-offs and high impact decisions. The team owns goal critical to the success and growth of AWS so the leader will need to be comfortable relaying complex concepts to senior leadership. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS - Minimum of 8 years experience of technical and people management in a software engineering team. - Minimum of 5 years experience developing and operating mission critical online services - A proven track record of owning deliverables with multiple dependencies and cross-team collaboration - Strong verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated technical leadership - Strong business and technical vision - Have experience developing and operating large scale distributed systems, including multiple data centers and thousands of servers, making them simple and easy to use - Know how to run a scrum for a high performing team and get things done - Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment - Strong knowledge of *NIX systems and one or more of Java, Kotlin, Go, Rust, Python, Ruby, C/C++. - Track record of hiring and retaining great Engineers - Have been successful working across organizational boundaries, bringing together people with diverse perspectives and experience to find solutions.
